CONVENTION PHOTOS:  Another character in the DC Comics Universe (DCU) is Harley Quinn.  I'm told by the costumed attendee shown below from the 2009 Long Beach Comic Con (LBCC) that her costume is a variation of Harley Quinn. Since I don't keep up with all of the characters in the DCU, I gotta belive her!  Besides, she looked dangerous with that weapon, and I wanted to believe her!

Tom Corbett Space Cadet #1 Will Be Released In 2 Weeks!

Click here to see our ENDING SOONEST Comics, Graphic Novels, Toys, Cards and Magazines for sale!

Tom Corbett...

Space Cadet #1

Will Be Released In 2 Weeks @ Your LCBS!

Click Here to see our NEWLY LISTED Comics, Graphic Novels, Toys, Fanzines and Prozines!

Above:  Bill Spangler, the Writer on the new 4 issue mini-series from Bluewater Comics!

To The Left: The Front Cover to Issue #1!

Taking a break today from my new series on comics and graphic novels that I found out about at the 2009 Long Beach Comic Con...

And instead blogging about what YOU should be able to find at YOUR Local Comic Book Store, (LCBS) in two weeks!

That would be the first issue of the new four issue mini-series from Bluewater Productions, written by Bill Spangler and illustrated by John DaCosta.   My thanks to Bill for bringing this new comic book title to my attention!

So what is this concept about?   Here's what the Bluewater PR says about the concept:

"The classic space hero from the 1950s returns in an all-new limited series! Long before Kirk, Spock and those other guys went to school, Tom Corbett, Roger Manning, and Astro were attending Space Academy, in a TV series that sparked novels, comic strips and merchandise. Tom is the charismatic leader of the team, Roger is sharp-tongued navigator, and Astro controls engineering. The cadets have their first encounter with a dangerous new enemy with a surprising origin!"

Here are the credits for this first issue:

By:                Bill Spangler, John Dacosta, William Ramos Jr, Niko Anaya, Chris Colbert - (Cover B)
Type:           Comics
Genres:        Science-Fiction
Publisher:    Bluewater Productions
Pub. Date:   October 14th, 2009
UPC:            837654359488
For ages:    16+

What I liked about this first issue is that it is a Fun Read!  And No, I'm Not That Old to remember the original airings of the TV episodes!  (Almost, but not quite!).  The original series ran from 1950 - 1955 on a few different networks.

Anyways, there was a series of Tom Corbett — Space Cadet stories that were depicted in what was then the 'pop culture' of the 1950's.  Tom Corbett was on television, on the radio, in books, and of course comic books - my favorite venue at the time.  Additionally there were comic strips, coloring books, and View-Master reels that were also manufactured during the 1950s.

There has been an attempt to bring back this title in the 1990's, but that didn't  work out.  I'm glad to see this concept being brought back now, and introduced to a new generation of readers!  An added plus is that is a four issue mini-series, so there should be a complete story arc printed here.

Bill Spangler's first issue story is good reading for an introductory issue and has a 'hook' to bring you back for the next issue.  You have to get those intros out of the way so you can move your readers along to the next issue!  Additionally there is a 'mystery' of which only part of it is answered in this first issue, so you'll have to come back for the second issue!  Good lead in issue for this series!

John DaCosta's artwork is somewhat angular and bold, a different style than I am used to seeing sci-fi comics illustrated in, but in this sci-fi story it fits right in!   Some may consider his art style in this series 'cartoony', but it fit with bringing this series up to date in my opinion.  Besides, I am so tired of seeing the Buck Rogers franchise being rehashed and reworked and replayed, that it is nice to see another older series be brought to light via the sequential art form!

Niko's coloring in this issue doesn't reflect a lot of cold dark colors, even though the action takes place mostly in space.  The colors used on the pages are 'warm' colors and flow well with the illustration style.

William's lettering is his usual good work.  Which speaks a lot for itself.

The only thing I could see in the presentation of the comic itself, is that the commercial ad pages are kind of 'jarring' against the illustrated pages of the comic book itself.  I've seen other companies save their ad pages for the last part of the book.  In this comic book, that might have been the better placement of ad pages...

For a fun read, and once you're hooked into the 'mystery', you'll want to get the second issue of this series.

You can keep up with what's going on at Bluewater Comics by going to their web site at:

http://www.bluewaterprod.com/

My thanks again to Bill Spangler who brought this comic book title to my attention!

Yeah Dudes & Dudettes!  That's Right!  Surf's Up @ LBCC starting today!

I have been blogging that the 1st Annual Long Beach Comic Con would be upon us very shortly... That's because it starts at the beginning of October; running from October 2nd thru the 4th!  Which means... it Starts TODAY!

The photos published to the above right show the LBCC taking shape yesterday starting in the morning and ending in the evening.  They are published here so you have a 'feeling' on what it takes to put on a comic con!  Most attendees never see the 'before' photos when an exhibit hall is built up.  Thanks to Mike Scigliano for first publishing the photos at his Facebook member page.

I've already mentioned several of the comics creators guests that are attending and even published pictures of a few of them: (Click here for that post.)

Plus, I previously blogged that there's going to be media guests, (please be aware that many of the following may charge additional for autographs):

I blogged about Hygena and Ms. Limelight from Stan Lee's Who Wants To Be A Superhero TV show on SyFy would be in attendance. (Click here for that post.)

Plus I blogged about Reb (Captain America) Brown would be there. (Click here to see that post.)

I have also mentioned that Stan Lee is the Special Guest of Honor.  He is also to be at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Con Opening.  There is also a Stan Lee / Jim Lee 'Meet n Greet' Saturday @10:00 AM that is being sponsored by another outfit.  There is a charge for that special event of $350 if it isn't already sold out.  Plus @ approx 11:00 AM there are / were approximately 400 tickets being sold to have Stan Lee sign one item of your choice. Cost per ticket is $45. I thought my blog readers should know about this prior to attending the Con. These two events are being sponsored by another company outside of the LBCC folks.  I am presenting this here so attendees are not surprised when attending the Con and wondering what the buzz is during those hours on Saturday.

Who else is scheduled to be there?  Well, here is the link to the full comics creators and media guests schedule: http://www.longbeachcomiccon.com/guests.html  - Please note, appearances and times are always subject to possible change, just like at any other convention.

Something I haven't blogged about yet are the EXCLUSIVES that can be found only @ LBCC!  Even though this is the First LBCC, there is a long list of exclusives of comics that are being distributed or sold at this con for the first time.  Here is the link to those:  http://www.longbeachcomiccon.com/showexclusive.html

I've also blogged about a few of the programs that will be running, but here is the link to full programming schedule:  http://www.longbeachcomiccon.com/program.html

I also believe You can still buy your tickets online for the LBCC at:

http://www.longbeachcomiccon.com/p-1-long-beach-comic-con-registration.aspx

Also, It's not too late... If you would like to join with over 1,400 other members who have 'joined' the Long Beach Comic Con Facebook Fan Page, feel free to do so at:

http://www.facebook.com/LongBeachComicCon?ref=mf

You'll get more up-to-date information as the Con gets closer to its' opening day by signing up there!  They even added new guests that are appearing, as late as yesterday morning, (October 1st @ 5:30 AM PST)! Plus they added another blurb @ 6:00 AM PST this morning (Friday Oct 2nd).

And yes, I will be there @ LBCC both Friday and Saturday.  I will be wearing a blue colored polo shirt with white colored letters stating my Blog's name:   'ComicBookCollectorsBlog.com', as Tina made sure I have several of those for the cons to wear so I'm easier to find!  (Photo of me wearing one is shown at the bottom left of this post.)  Just stop me and say "Hi" anytime!

Speaking of Tina, she will be there Saturday Only.  There are more programs running on Sunday, but we have two prior committments to attend that day, so if You are looking for us, find me Friday, or both of us on Saturday!

Well that's it for blogging this morning.  I'll be closing up shop and driving North to Long Beach very soon.  I want to be there for the special ribbon cutting ceremony, and whatever else is in store for today/tonight!

I will be 'Facebook Mobiling' some photos from the LBCC, but am planning to enjoy meeting creators and media guests for the most part today.  Plus of course taking regular photos for blog purposes later!  I already have several invites to stop by and pick up new comics for possible review here in my Blog, plus a sketch that a Facebook Friend is illustrating for me.  So come back soon to check those upcoming blogs out as I like sharing new finds here in my Blog!

And since Tina and I will be 'working' the Con, we won't be blogging from the LBCC itself.  However, since I was asked about it, there is internet service there at the Long Beach Convention Center.  The Center does offer WI-FI service at the following rate: $4.95 per hour or $12.95 per day.

Also, my thanks to the folks at MAD Exhibits who are putting on this Con: Martha Donato, Phil Lawrence, Mike Scigliano, also known as "Scig!", Steven Hoveke, Kate Horn, Mike Horn, and Chip Carter.  I am looking forward to attending this first con later today and tomorrow!

BTW.... Whereas Tina and I don't publish comics or books (yet?) or set up at comic cons, (except at our own Facebook Virtual Comic Con Dealer Table), we do have thousands of indies and mainstream comics in our own online store. Be sure to check out our new listings of comics, graphic novels, Comic Con exclusives and more pop culture items for sale in our online eBay Featured Store that our blogs are based on!  It's due to sales at this online store that keep us going with the ability to post blogs like the one you have read here today!

'Spotlight' On...

Bruce Durham!

Click Here to see our ending soonest REH - Robert E Howard Comics, Graphic Novels, Toys, Fanzines and Prozines!

Above:  The Home of Robert E Howard in Cross Plains, Texas, which is now a Museum!

To The Left:  Bruce Durham standing by the Robert E Howard (REH) portrait at the Howard Museum.

This entry in our 'Spotlight On...' blog post series is about ...

Bruce Durham, who sent a Facebook Friends request to me at the beginning of September.

As I do with everyone that either sends me a Friends request or accepts one that I send them, I check out the info and photos tabs on their Facebook wall to get to 'know' them a little better.

What I saw on Bruce's photo wall really got my interest, as he had attended the 'Howard Days' back in 2006!   For those that don't know which Howard, that would be THE Robert E Howard (REH), creator of such characters as Conan, King Kull, Solomon Kane and others!

I invited Bruce to send in a brief bio about himself, as I could see he had several interests and activities that he was doing that would make a good blog post. The following is what he submitted:

Hi, my name is Bruce Durham, or for those who frequent the Conan.com community forums, Crom’s Justiciar. I was born in Toronto, Ontario shortly before Hurricane Hazel and have spent the majority of my years in neighbouring Mississauga. Though I majored in film and television, it was before Toronto gained the moniker as Hollywood North. So, seeing as I predated the industry, I ended up in the cable TV business. For over 30 years.

In the 60’s I perused a selection of pocketbooks and came across a title with artwork that was, quite simply, stunning. The book was ‘Conan the Conqueror’, and the cover was by the legendary Frank Frazetta. From that moment on I was hooked, and anything that had the name Robert E. Howard attached, I bought. It was only later I came to understand the liberties that (Lancer) series editor L. Sprague de Camp had taken with Howard’s work, and it wasn’t until the Wandering Star and Del Rey editions appeared that I could read Howard as he was meant to be read.

In 2002 Conan Properties Inc. was acquired by Paradox Entertainment. In early 2003 they opened a website complete with community forums. At the time I was moderating another Paradox forum, and because of my knowledge of REH was asked to help out. After a short stint as a moderator, I was made Administrator. Over the years the forums have grown into a valuable resource on all things Howard, attracting scholars such as Rusty Burke, Mark Finn and Patrice Louinet. In addition to Howard’s writings there are forums covering the comics, frequented by various artists and writers, as well as debates over the films. Currently Michael J. Bassett and Paul Berrow, director and producer respectively of ‘Solomon Kane’, drop by to post updates. In addition, Berrow is keeping us posted on the new Bran Mak Morn movie. And it doesn’t stop there. We discuss the Hyborian Age, Rpgs and so on. The website can be found at http://www.conan.com

In my spare time I write, with over 20 stories published in various venues, as well as authoring an upcoming graphic novel. You can visit my website at: http://www.brucedurham.ca

So as you can see Bruce is a pretty busy guy!  You should check out the forums mentioned in the link above should you be interested in the Hyborian Age and other things Conan!

Bruce didn't mention that if You are on Facebook, You can find out more about what he is doing and also post input at his Facebook Comic Con | Bruce Durham creator table at:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=63716717402&ref=ts

My thanks to Bruce for taking the time to update me and this Blog's readers as to what he is currently doing, and where you can contact him further and also get into some lively discussions!

And... Thanks again to all of YOU reading our current and archived blog posts!  We do blog daily on comic book creators, comic book reviews, and other pop culture news and events including some TV shows and theatrical films!

While You are here today... Please check out our new listings of comics, graphic novels, Comic Con exclusives and more pop culture items for sale in our online eBay Featured Store that most of our blogs are based on!  It's due to sales at this online store that keep us going with the ability to post blogs like the one you have read here today!  And Yes, there are many Conan item listed there, plus hundreds more to be listed!

The Fearless Zombie Hunters #1

Above:  Manuel Ríos Sarabia (at left) and Gared Campos who is holding another comic book title from Sadhaka Studio, (Rainbow Warriors #1), @ 2009 San Diego Comic Con International (SDCC).

To The Left:  The front cover to The Fearless Zombie Hunters #1.

Continuing My Series On Creators that I met at the Comic Con International: San Diego 2009 and received at least one issue of their works for possible review...

Is Manuel Ríos Sarabia of Sadhaka Studio.  Manuel's Company is actually nearby in San Diego which I wasn't aware of at the time when I met him at the Con.

This is what Manuel's advertising blurb about this comic says:

"The Fearless Zombie Hunters 1

Writer/Creator Manuel Rios Sarabia
 Art Gared Campos

Standard Comic
Black & White
Page Count: 28
Cover price $3.99

With his dying breath, El Angel Exterminador thrusts his legacy upon his hopeless son, Angel. Angel decides he is not really cut for the job of being the new Angel but fate puts him in front of a horde of zombies that might just make him change his mind. The appearance of Abronsius, Zombie Hunter, will help Angel to make his final decision.

The Fearless Zombie Hunters is… well, basically a tale about fearless zombie hunters. Imagine a black comedy starring Johnny Depp as the wise, middle aged and only living doctor in bio-thanathology, Professor Abronsius; an overweight Diego Luna (Y tu mama también) as the incompetent and disgraceful Angel, Son of El Angel, the greatest wrestler ever in Mexican history and Ana de la Reguera (Nacho Libre) as Candy, the sassy, sexy, retro aesthtete and extremely feminine balance between those two complete opposites. Now picture the three of them (in comic book form) fighting zombies for the sake of the world. There you have it. The Fearless Zombie Hunters.

Okay... So what's my thoughts on the first issue of this comic book title?

Well, I've seen a concept about luchadores and monsters before in the past.  It's been a while and hasn't been overdone to death storyline wise. So seeing it here was an acceptable concept.

This story is probably going to be one that if you picked it up after seeing the front cover and the title, then you would be okay with the concept presented inside.  So it remained to be seen if it was going to live up to its' title or not.

The comic appears to not take itself itself too seriously. Which is good, because there are some bizarre moments during the story.  Heck, it's a zombie story after all!  The style of writing is similar to a 'B' movie script, not saying it's amiss, just that there is a niche for this sort of thing, and is passable if you go into reading the comic knowing that.  BTW, I did enjoy the reference to The Thing's battle cry in the story!

The artwork by Gared Campos printed in black and white fits the storyline.  Yeah ,when depicting zombies and the carnage that zombies wreak, black and white is a better presentation.  Actually it's more like a grayscale coloring style.  The illustrations really make the story stand out more.

The lettering balloons were a little strange in places, but not too upsetting.  There were no interior page ads, which is why this independently published comic is the $3.99 cover price.

Even though Zombies and their ilk may be losing favor among the general reading public at this time, the concept presented in this comic book,  Fearless Zombie Hunters #1 is one that hasn't been overdone as of yet, and is an interesting first issue for those that like zombie comics.

You can find more about this comic book at Manuel's web site at: http://www.sadhakastudio.com/  which appears to be under a revision at this time.   Until then it appears with additional info, this one is still current: http://www.lapaella.com.mx/etogawa/sadhaka/inicio.html

BTW.... Whereas Tina and I don't publish comics or books (yet?) or set up at comic cons anymore, (except at our own Facebook Virtual Comic Con Dealer Table), we do have thousands of indies and mainstream comics in our own online store. Stan Lee's Superheroes

Yesterday I brought to my blog readers attention that the 1st Annual Long Beach Comic Con will be upon us very shortly...

That's because it starts at the beginning of October; running from October 2nd thru the 4th!

When I was checking the guests lists, both comics creators and media guests, a couple of names jumped out at me.  That's because I haven't seen them at a con for a while.  Those would be:

Melody Mooney (Hygena on Stan Lee's Who Wants To Be A Superhero? WWTBAS) and Trisha Paytas, (Ms. Limelight also on Stan Lee's WWTBAS)!

I have kept up with blogging about another contestant from Stan's show, 'Fat Momma' a.k.a. Nell Wilson, who I have seen a few times at other cons.  She is also fun to meet, that's for sure!  (Click here for a recent post.)

Also, back at the end of July I saw Tonya Kay (a.k.a. 'Creature' in the 1st Season of WWTBAS), at Jim Balent & Holly Golightly's booth at the SDCC. (Click here for that post.)

But Hygena and Ms. Limelight haven't been seen in the SoCal area that much, so those of you that are fans of the show will want to stop in and see them both, PLUS their mentor, Stan (The Man) Lee himself who is Master of Ceremonies at this con!

I have blogged several times about Stan's series, and gotta admit that I have a fondness for keeping track of several of the contestants. After all, I keep running into several of them!

So anyways I thought I would point these two fan faves out to you today. Who else is scheduled to be there?  Well, here is the link to the full comics creators and media guests schedule: http://www.longbeachcomiccon.com/guests.html  - Please note, appearances and times are always subject to possible change, just like at any other convention.  Plus there is probably an additional charge for autographs.

Now that you know that these two special guests will be there... You can buy your tickets online for the LBCC at:

Also, If you would like to join with over 1,300 other members who have 'joined' the Long Beach Comic Con Facebook Fan Page, feel free to do so at:

SUPERHERO PHOTOS:   Yeah... I gotta admit I dug the two seasons of Stan Lee's Who Wants To Be A Superhero on TV!  So when I saw that two of the contestants on the show were going to be at the LBCC, I had to blog a little bit more on the con and run their pics again!  Unfortunately Basura, (shown below), will NOT be one of them at this con... But she was 'Hot' after the transformation to her new costume given to her by Stan on the show!  Basura's secret identity is: Aja De Coudreaux!
