Tom Corbett... Space Cadet #1  Will Be Released In 2 Weeks @ Your LCBS! Above:  Bill Spangler, the Writer on the new 4 issue mini-series from Bluewater Comics! To The Left: The Front Cover to Issue #1! Taking a break today from my new series on comics and graphic novels that I found out about at the 2009 Long Beach Comic Con... And instead blogging about what YOU should be able to find at YOUR Local Comic Book Store, (LCBS) in two weeks! That would be the first issue of the new four issue mini-series from Bluewater Productions, written by Bill Spangler and illustrated by John DaCosta.   My thanks to Bill for bringing this new comic book title to my attention! So what is this concept about?   Here's what the Bluewater PR says about the concept: "The classic space hero from the 1950s returns in an all-new limited series! Long before Kirk, Spock and those other guys went to school, Tom Corbett, Roger Manning, and Astro were attending Space Academy, in a TV series that sparked novels, comic strips and merchandise. Tom is the charismatic leader of the team, Roger is sharp-tongued navigator, and Astro controls engineering. The cadets have their first encounter with a dangerous new enemy with a surprising origin!" Here are the credits for this first issue: By:                Bill Spangler, John Dacosta, William Ramos Jr, Niko Anaya, Chris Colbert - (Cover B)  Type:           Comics  Genres:        Science-Fiction Publisher:    Bluewater Productions  Pub. Date:   October 14th, 2009 UPC:            837654359488 For ages:    16+     What I liked about this first issue is that it is a Fun Read!  And No, I'm Not That Old to remember the original airings of the TV episodes!  (Almost, but not quite!).  The original series ran from 1950 - 1955 on a few different networks. Anyways, there was a series of Tom Corbett — Space Cadet stories that were depicted in what was then the 'pop culture' of the 1950's.  Tom Corbett was on television, on the radio, in books, and of course comic books - my favorite venue at the time.  Additionally there were comic strips, coloring books, and View-Master reels that were also manufactured during the 1950s.   There has been an attempt to bring back this title in the 1990's, but that didn't  work out.  I'm glad to see this concept being brought back now, and introduced to a new generation of readers!  An added plus is that is a four issue mini-series, so there should be a complete story arc printed here. Bill Spangler's first issue story is good reading for an introductory issue and has a 'hook' to bring you back for the next issue.  You have to get those intros out of the way so you can move your readers along to the next issue!  Additionally there is a 'mystery' of which only part of it is answered in this first issue, so you'll have to come back for the second issue!  Good lead in issue for this series! John DaCosta's artwork is somewhat angular and bold, a different style than I am used to seeing sci-fi comics illustrated in, but in this sci-fi story it fits right in!   Some may consider his art style in this series 'cartoony', but it fit with bringing this series up to date in my opinion.  Besides, I am so tired of seeing the Buck Rogers franchise being rehashed and reworked and replayed, that it is nice to see another older series be brought to light via the sequential art form! Niko's coloring in this issue doesn't reflect a lot of cold dark colors, even though the action takes place mostly in space.  The colors used on the pages are 'warm' colors and flow well with the illustration style. William's lettering is his usual good work.  Which speaks a lot for itself.  The only thing I could see in the presentation of the comic itself, is that the commercial ad pages are kind of 'jarring' against the illustrated pages of the comic book itself.  I've seen other companies save their ad pages for the last part of the book.  In this comic book, that might have been the better placement of ad pages... For a fun read, and once you're hooked into the 'mystery', you'll want to get the second issue of this series. Spotlight On... Joe Pepitone, a.k.a. JoepeP! Above:  JoepeP and his auto art are featured in the upcoming Hemmings Classic Car Magazine! At the Left: Da' Man hisself... JoepeP!   This entry in our 'Spotlight On...' blog post series is about a special person who is celebrating his birthday today...   Yep, JoepeP is turning 'Double Nickels' today!  But he isn't cruising along at 55, nosiree... he's speeding down the highway quite literally!  JoepeP will be featured in the upcoming October 2009 issue of 'Hemmings Classic Cars' Magazine!   The front cover to that issue is shown at the top right of this blog post, while Joepep himself is shown below in the Auto Art section, (plus his auto art is pictured in additional pages), as seen below left:     The newspaper clipping at the immediate above right is from an earlier mention of JoepeP's love of illustrating autos during the years. JoepeP was mentioned in that newspaper because of his works for Merritt Parkway, and the fact that the Merritt Parkway was celebrating its' own 70th Birthday last September! Female Force: Caroline Kennedy From Bluewater Comics

 

Female Force: Caroline Kennedy From  Bluewater Comics!     Returning home last night after grocery shopping...  I turned on our TV set while bringing up the bags of groceries from my car. All three major cable news channels were then showing the end of the memorial service for Senator Edward M Kennedy. I saw a bit of Vice President Joe Biden's speech as I brought up the cold items for Tina to put away, (we live in a three story townhouse). I then noted on a return trip upstairs with the final bags that Caroline Kennedy was then talking.  I stopped to listen to listen to her. Recently I had read BlueWater Comics' Female Force: Caroline Kennedy #1 issue, but had not yet reviewed it here in mhy Blog. I felt at that time last night that after listening to Caroline and then hearing the ending song at the service, 'When Irish Eyes Are Smiling', that reviewing the issue here this morning would be a timely thing to do... Caroline was born five years after myself, so the first real rememberance of Caroline were the photos of her and her family at the White House.  Then of course Caroline attending her father's funeral in 1963 as seen on  black and white TV. To me, she never really stood out that much publicly early in her life, as she was overshadowed by her mother and her brother in the public spotlight.  I wasn't aware that she wanted to be 'left alone' as stated in her later book "The Right to Privacy". Plus being mainly on the West Coast most of my life, and with Caroline not wanting the public spotlight for most of her life; I just didn't know that much about her, other than her connection to her famous family. The writer of this comic book, Neal Bailey, does a good job in telling a brief biography about Caroline.  Even he though knows that it isn't the full and complete story, so there is a full page of source links that the reader can access online to learn more about Caroline.  The links are to online articles, videos, and wikipedia entries.  After all, a writer can only put so much into a regular sized comic book issue! Ryan Howe captures the flavor of 'Camelot' in the beginning pages of the story.  His art style is more of a 'cartoony' illustrative one IMHO, so the likenesses of the main characters are recognizable but are not pictured in a 'realistic' tone.  Please do not misunderstand what I am saying here... the style does not detract from the illustrated biography, just that it is in a more 'cartoony' format. Kirsty Swan's coloring fit the somber period of the first page, which showed the funeral procession of Caroline's father.  The rest of the coloring made the art flow when reading the panels in the ongoing pages. Wilson Ramos Jr. did another fine job lettering this issue.  I always expect that of him, and he doesn't disappoint. The striking front cover was by Vinnie Tartamella.  Another frameable cover from this artist! However, I believe that it was the difference in the more 'realistic' illustrative style between the front cover's artist and the interior pages done by another artist that made the interior pages appear to be of a more 'cartoony' nature, but that is my personal opinion.     As I said at the beginning of this blog post, I didn't know all that much about Caroline Kennedy the individual.  This biography as told in comic book format is a good introduction to her life shown in a sequential art format and easy to read for all ages.  One final thought before wrapping up this post... My thoughts are with the Kennedy Clan as they lay to rest their family member, Edward M Kennedy today... Vincent Price Presents....

 

Vincent Price  Presents: The Comic Book Series From  Bluewater Comics!     There's been a dozen of these comic books published from BlueWater Comics...  Although I hadn't blogged about any of them until now. That's because I've only read issues #10 -12 so far.  Issue #1 came out in October 2008, and yes there is a #13 planned for the series, making it at least a "baker's dozen" of HoRRoR Comics in this continuing series! Below is what the marketing for this series had to say: One of classic Hollywood's most famous scary men, Vincent Price made a name for himself in classic mysteries and thrillers throughout the 1940's, 50's and 60's. Now Vincent Price Presents comes to Bluewater Productions as their 1st ongoing monthly series.   The series will feature some of Prices’s films as well as developing new frightening ones with his estate. Welcome back to the macabre world of Vincent Price! I have wanted to blog about the earlier issues I've read, but since it is my 'policy' to write basically only reviews on publications that I truly liked or found intriguing or 'different' enough to mention here, something or other in each of those comic issues I read kept me from doing so here... As stated before in this Blog, I don't normally write neutral or negative blogs, as each blog takes at least 45 minutes to generate with text, copy, cropping and hosting photos, etc.  (I just don't throw together a one paragraph 'mention' of a comic, graphic novel, or film along with a bunch of other non-related projects in a 'review' blog post.) Thus to spend that additional time on a comic book or other project that I didn't enjoy that much to begin with or maybe disappointed me a little, just doesn't make time management sense to me... So why hadn't I blogged about this series before?   That is because I found the earlier issues (#10-11) to be a little uneven for me.  I'm no editor, but it must be very difficult to present a comic book title that has different writers and artists each issue and a completely different story.  Editing a HoRRoR comic book that has just one story and presenting it each issue has to be even harder than editing an anthology comic book with multiple stories!   At least in an anthology issue that say has three stories, the reader could like one, be OK with a second, and dislike the third story.  Yet that same reader could be interested enough to pick up the next issue at their LCBS to at least glance at the cover and skim the interior pages to see if they want to purchase it. With a comic book that has just one story, and no true continuing character(s), that has to be a harder sell, if the potential buyer had lukewarm feelings for the previous issue(s). What this series has going for it is the 'Vincent Price Presents' title.  Yeah, I grew up in the late 1950's -60's when Vincent Price had his heyday in films.  So yes I could be a potential buyer for this series.  And with today's resurgence in HoRRoR films, comics and mags, there should be a good market for a comic book series like this with readers that are much younger than me! If each issue was like #12 was in pleasing me with both a good storyline and good art, then I would feel better in recommending this series to you, my Blog reader.  However so far, the earlier issues I read had either good art or good story or a combination of both but the twist ending was off, like with issue #11.   Issue #12, (front cover pictured above), has a good storyline by Nick Lyons.  Good art by R.H. Stewart.  The usual good lettering by Wilson Ramos Jr.  The front cover by Jim McDermott is catching to the eye, which should help pull the casual reader's attention to this title to at least take a look at the interior pages.  It is similar in 'look' to the Rue Morgue cover with Forrest J Ackerman that I blogged about in October 2008.  Here are the details for this issue #12 only: By:    Nick Lyons, R. In 'Fade Away,' Private Eye Frank Wood takes on a case in which he must investigate mysterious break-ins at a home belonging to a wealthy old man named Jack Leonard. Is there really an intruder or is Jack losing his mind and seeing someone that isn't there? I'm hoping that what I liked in this issue will be repeated in upcoming issues.  Again I realize that it is very difficult to present stories that have different creative teams each issue that a regular reader would like. I myself want to like this series.  I would like to see the license with the Vincent Price Estate be continued, helping keep Vincent's name in the public eye.  I was pleased with this issue.  We'll see how it goes with the upcoming issues if I am to blog about this series again... Notes:  This issue's cover price was $3.99, which is the standard cost of new comic books today.   However I have noticed at BlueWater's web site that there will be a trade paper back compiling the earlier issues.  I do not see what issues of the twelve published so far will be included in that TPB. Here are the known details of the upcoming TBP which is to be released September 30th: The Gothic horror tradition of film icon Vincent Price is revived in these twisted comic book one-shots that transplant the best of the horror genre into innovative and bizarre landscapes for a new generation. Vincent Price serves as host and muse for these unforgettable stories, which include horrific transformations, twisting plots, perversions of science, labyrinthine castles, Gothic dread, surreal revelations, and a little unexpected genre-bending. The Tek War Chronicles Comic Book Series!

 

William Shatner Presents: The Tek War Chronicles From  Bluewater Comics!     I've been reading this series since issue #1...  Although I hadn't blogged about it yet. That changes today, after reading issue #3! As stated before in this Blog, I don't normally write neutral or negative blogs, as each blog takes at least 45 minutes to generate with text, copy, cropping and hosting photos, etc.  (I just don't throw together a one paragraph 'mention' of a comic, graphic novel, or film along with a bunch of other non-related projects in a 'review' blog post.) Thus to spend that additional time on a comic book or other project that I didn't enjoy that much to begin with, just doesn't make time management sense to me... So why hadn't I blogged about this series before?  After all, I was familar with the concept.  It's been around, off and on, since William Shatner first came up with it back in 1988.  And yeah, I enjoyed him in Star Trek: TOS, the Star Trek Films and TJ Hooker that this series seems to have 'blended elements' from!  However, I wasn't overly excited about the prior Tek films, TV Series, comics, novels or games.  It was just... there. I kind of felt the same way about the first two issues of this comic book series.  It was an OK storyline, but it just seemed to be taking much too long to get me heavily involved with it.  It didn't feel like it had too much continuity or baggage for me not to enjoy it, but the story was taking too long to draw me in for the ride. However, issue #3 pulled me in.  Now I feel like the time I've 'invested' in reading the first three issues have not been 'wasted'.  I'm looking forward to reading the next issue now! So I've told you what I felt about the writing of this storyline thus far.  Those writers are William Shatner and Scott Davis.  How about the penciling?  That has been consistent thru the series so far, thanks to Erich Owen.  Maybe that's what kept me reading into issue #3?  The colors by Michelle Davies flows with the artwork.  The lettering is the usual great work by Jaymes Reed.  Here are the details for this issue #3 only: By:                 William Shatner, Scott Davis, Erich Owens  Type:             Comics  Genres:          Science-Fiction Series:           William Shatner Presents Tek War Publisher:      Bluewater Productions  Pub. Female Force: Condoleezza Rice   From  Bluewater Comics!     There's been a few issues of this comic book series 'Female Force' published from BlueWater Comics...  Of which I have blogged about a couple so far, those on Princess Diana, and Caroline Kennedy. That's because I enjoy reading about history and history makers.  The sequential art format is great to read on topics that could possibly otherwise be a little 'dry' to read for the casual reader!     Plus, I grew up reading 'Treasure Chest' Comics that were distributed at the Catholic Schools where I attended in my formative years.  Those comics printed inspirational stories of sports and folk heroes, and of course saints, as well as general history topics.  Those comics, actually titled 'Treasure Chest of Fun and Fact' were published from 1946 to 1972.  Now, I'm not saying that Condoleezza, Princess Diana, Caroline Kennedy or the others in this Female Force series are / were 'Saints', but their lives are interesting reading in my opinion, no matter what political persuasion you may be of. A special one-shot that chronicles Rice's life from her childhood to her accomplished career as the 1st African American woman to hold the United States, Secretary of State position. This issue will document how Condoleezza Rice became one of the most powerful women in the past decade. I didn't know all that much about Condoleezza prior to her coming to the national stage in recent years.  This publication gave me some indication of her childhood and her formative years.  It also gave more info on what she did during her period of being in the Bush Administration.  The cover of the comic book by Vinnie Tartamella was excellent as usual. The interior pages were illustrated by Dave MacNeil and paced well.  The colors by Osmarco Valladao fit the tone of the book, and the lettering was the usual great job by Jaymes Reed.  The amount of text was a little 'heavy' in places on the pages, but there was a lot of ground to cover to cover in this publication, so I can forgive that by the writer, Chris Ward.  It has to be hard to get all that history covered in so few pages! This issue's cover price was $3.99, well worth the price for this stand alone issue #1 in the series of Female Force.  I recommend checking this issue out and the others I have blogged about in this series!
