Continuing my new series on comics and graphic novels that I found out about at the 2009 Long Beach Comic Con... Is G.I. Joe: Cobra: Special #1 From IDW Publishing! Okay, so that isn't usually the genre of comics that I blog about here... But after stopping in at the IDW booth and talking with AnnaMaria White, Marketing & PR Manager for IDW, I decided to give it a read. And you know what....? This comic book really surprised me! It was a really good read! And it kept me interested in reading the whole issue without thinking it was a 'G.I. Joe' comic book. Yeah, I know, I buy and sell a lot of GI Joe Comics, mostly from the era when Marvel Comics published the title. But you know what? This isn't one of those type of stories! And yes, Tina and I have read several IDW series before. Tina especially liked the '24' series based on the FOX TV Show. However, this story and art is a lot more 'realistic' than other G.I. Joe issues I have read in the past. So what is this issue about? Here's the blurb from the PR for the issue: "Spinning out of the red-hot thriller G.I. JOE: COBRA, this one-shot follows up on issue #4’s surprise reveal and focuses on our big bad guy (or is it multiple bad guys?). By the same creative team as the original mini, don’t miss out. This is the perfect end cap to the series!" Here are the credits for this one-shot issue: Writer: Mike Costa Artist: Antonio Fuso Colorist: Lovern Kindzierski Letters: Robbie Robbins Edited by: Andy Schmidt, Denton Tipton & Carlos Guzman What I found was a well written story with a lot of meaningful narration. Actual spoken dialogue was sparse, adding to the meaning of the storyline. The colors to this issue fit so well with the storyline that the colorist has to be duly noted for a job well done! The style of art fit this story very well. So much so that I believe this is a well rounded comic book issue that I would give to the mainstream viewing public that don't read comics to show them what a story with sequential art can be! It is that good of an issue! The cover price to this comic book is $3.99 USD. You can purchase copies of this comic book direct from IDW's Online Store, if you can't find this issue at your LCBS, by going to: https://shop.idwpublishing.com/comics/series/gi-joe/g-i-joe-cobra-special-1.html My thanks again to AnnaMaria White for taking the time to choose this comic out of all the ones on the table that she thought would interest me! (There was one more she chose for me, but I haven't read it... picked up a lot of comics/graphic novels while at the LBCC to read!) BTW.... Whereas Tina and I don't publish comics or books (yet?) or set up at comic cons anymore, (except at our own Facebook Virtual Comic Con Dealer Table), we do have thousands of indies and mainstream comics in our own online store. Be sure to check out our new listings of comics, graphic novels, Comic Con exclusives and more pop culture items for sale in our online eBay Featured Store that our blogs are based on! It's due to sales at this online store that keep us going with the ability to post blogs like the one you have read here today! Thanks again to all of YOU reading our current and archived blog posts! We do blog daily on comic book creators, comic book reviews, and other pop culture news and events including some TV shows and theatrical films! ~ Michael @ ComicBookCollectorsBlog.com
