I met Laura Rosenberg of PSA.com at the recent 2009 Long Beach Comic Con while she was at the PSA vendor booth.
Even though I don't 'collect' sports cards, I still have some from my 'youth', plus several non-sports cards sets of comic book characters and TV shows. So I made the time to check out what PSA had to offer in third party grading for cards as I knew that PSA has a good 'rep' in the industry. (I had not seen them represented before at other comics cons.)
Laura pointed out the current issue of the SMR (Sports Market Report) magazine, and it immediately was one that I wanted! The cover had one of the 1966 Batman TV Show Cards featured in a PSA encapsulation. So I got that issue to read later.
I'm glad I did!   There was also a back of the magazine feature of the 1966 Green Hornet TV Show card set!   I'm a 'little' excited about the upcoming 2010 Green Hornet Film as well. So this article and the Batman cards article were good reading for me!
And neither article was about sports cards in this 'Sports Market Report' magazine! That's why you can't judge a book (or magazine or comic, etc.) by their title!

I met Richard A Hamilton at the recent Long Beach Comic Con while he was at 'The Antidote Trust' booth.
Back on August 22nd I had blogged about the first issue of this 3 part comic book series, (click here for that post).   He remembered the blog post and asked me if I had seen the next two issues of that series. I hadn't, but told him that with the first issue being so good, that it had a good start and would remember to look for the final two issues. That's when he told me that the three issue mini-series was being 'collected' into a Trade Paper Back (TPB).
Now the mini-series is available as a TPB for those of you that didn't get all three issues of the 'floppies' (single issues) either! Here are the details for this collected mini-series:

Okay, if You have already clicked on the link above that would have taken you to my earlier blog post on the first issue of this series... You would know that I loved the premise, the writing, the artwork... everything actually about the first issue.
So, having now read the TPB, I was able to finish the story arc that was presented in the first issue. You know... it didn't disappoint me!
The story was funny AND entertaining, the pencils by Jeremy Dale were just right for this series, and Rob Jones complemented the artwork by inking it. Colors by Jelle Van Den Brink added to the whole presentation.
I for one enjoyed seeing this in a TPB (graphic novel style) format! This was a fun read... and I would say it would be for those that don't always want their comics in a 'grim and gritty' style.
I also appreciated the 'winks' to the well known Dynamic Duo, who in this story are portrayed as 'The Cowl' and 'Kid Cowl'.

Michael McClain sent me a preview copy of his upcoming comic book series "Nyssa: War".
Michael was inspired back in 1997 to start his own comics studio, and publishes a few titles at this time as M-Studios Publishing LLC. I have already blogged about one of those titles, Ray Leonard's "Guytron", (click here for that blog post.)
First off, let me post what the first issue of the Nyssa: War series is about. Here is the description of the story:
Nyssa is © and ™ to MICHAEL McCLAIN (M-Studios) All rights reserved.
They called her Nyssa--a hired assassin, a warrior who walks the path of lost souls, fighting the demons of her dark treatment soul. She travels through the gates of hell to vengeance against those who have destroyed her family name. She learned to kill without mercy--that the road of a samurai.
Nyssa Story Synopsis
Nyssa (bodyguard) boss (G-Marco) pass on a assassination job and--- now he's the target. Nyssa and Rain (Nyssa best friend and business partner) have to protest him and save their own rear. This series will be done by the end of 2009.
Okay, now on to my thoughts of this first issue:
The cover art shown above at the top right of this post is without the logo and the lettering that would come with it. The artwork does make an impact on the casual browser that would see it at their LCBS. The additional logo and text adds to the cover. The finished cover would make me pick up the comic book at my LCBS to see what it is about.
Turning the front cover page... I find that on the inside front cover there are two house ads, one for 'Battle Blood' and the other for 'Guytron'. I'm going to stop for a moment and address something here that I will be mentioning later.   This could / should have been an intro page to the story line that is being presented. I for one have never read the earlier Nyssa comic book mini-series and had no idea what this series is going to be about...
The splash page does what it is supposed to do. Make a 'splash' impression in front of you, as if you were at a newstand or a LCBS and make you want to spend your $ to buy this and take it home with you to read and possibly collect the rest in the series.
The art style was presented by Michael McClain. I happened to like it in this story. The style was different enough, yet also familar, that it was easy to follow the storyline.
The coloring by Virginie D Menard added to the illustrations. Just the right amount of coloring to give it a certain 'feel' of likability.
The lettering done in-house flowed with the art & colors, which is what it is supposed to do.
Nest comes the writing... Here is what I found that detracted from my having full enjoyment from reading the first issue. And that is going back to what I wrote earlier. The inside front cover should / could have been an 'intro' to the characters that are in this story.   The splash page and the initial pages take off like I already knew the characters and their background history to each other.
However, as I said earlier, I didn't know these characters.  That being said... If I had read the earlier Nyssa mini-series, I'm sure I would have enjoyed it more. It was still a good read, just that I 'felt' I was missing 'something' from not having read the earlier continuity...
One additional note: there are only 16 interior pages to this comic. The front inside cover and the back inside cover are both house ads. Nothing wrong with that, except as I mentioned the front inside cover could have been an intro page to new readers, which would have been more helpful. This mini-series is projected to be four issues. With the current price of $3.99 for most comics, mainstream and indie comics, I would have preferred to see a few more pages of story.
All in all, I found this first issue to be drawn in a style I liked, the colors and lettering were fine, and story line flowed to the last page, which of course is "To Be Continued". Hopefully the following issues will address 'the newbie' to the Nyssa character and other characters involved in the series.

Tina and I met Derek McCulloch and Jimmie Robinson at the 2009 San Diego Comic Con International this Summer...
Although I had been a Facebook Friend of Derek's for a while before that! I had mentioned him in a blog post or two about his exhibiting at the SDCC, and made sure I visited his table at the Con. We happened to see him and Jimmie on Preview Night when we were looking for 1st Night items only.
For those of you that were there at the 2009 SDCC or even ones before that, you'll know that it is very hard to see everyone that you plan to see! Well, unfortunately when I was at the table later to take a photo for this Blog, Jimmie had stepped away. However, Derek was kind enough to pose with the T. Runt book, Plus another book that he had collaborated on with a different artist, Shepherd Hendrix, on 'Stagger Lee'.
First, let me post what the T. Runt story is about. Here is the description of the story and the details necessary for purchasing the book:
Vegrandis was the runt of the litter and was always picked on by the larger tyrannosaurs...but everything changes once Vegrandis discovers he isn't the smallest animal - let alone dinosaur - in the world!

Okay, now that the business part of this feature post is out of the way, what did I think of this children's book? And what is a children's book doing in this this Comic Book Collectors Blog?
Well, second question answered first! You see, there are a lot of cross-overs going on in the publishing and pop culture industries. There are screenwriters looking to write comics, because producers are looking for comic book wirters to write screenplays because comics are 'hot'. Novelists are writing comics, and comic writers are writing novels. There are other cross-overs going on as well, but I think you get the point.
However, I was kind of surprised at first thumbing through 'Stagger Lee' at the table at the SDCC, because I had already read a preview copy of T. Runt. You see, Derek McCulloch wrote the award-winning study of Stagger Lee which includes the topics of racism and music, so this children's book is on the other extreme in writing style as well as topic.
Yet, taken on its own stand alone merits, I really enjoyed this T. Runt book.   Enough to suggest to those of You that have nephews or nieces or small kids to consider purchasing this book for an early Christmas / Holiday present! Seriously, this story and artwork is that good! Plus how could you go wrong on DINOSAURS?! Especially with the way that Jimmie Robinson draws them! Great artwork here!
The book has a simple moral that is expressed through a solid and well-crafted storyline.   My thanks to Derek for bringing this children's book to my attention before the SDCC. I was finally able to fit this book into my Blog's schedule today, and just in time for early buying for gift-giving season! Which You can find at any of the standard book outlets or online right now. I know, I checked!

Events Are Being Held In Portland, Oregon AND Flemington, New Jersey!

I first came aware of Amber Love when she became a contestant for the 1st Facebook Comic Con Costume Contest that I was a judge in back in March of this year...
Amber wore a 'Firestar' costume and won 1st Place in that competition! (For full details on that just click here.)
I just became Facebook Friends with her this week, and found out that she will be at the East Coast site of the 4th Wonder Woman Day being held this very weekend!
Above at the top left of this post is a photo of taken at the same site last year, when Amber had a photo taken with Pete Marston, who is the son of the creator of Wonder Woman, William Marston!

While there he showed some comics that are coming out at LCBS across the country, and a few that were back issues at his company's table.
One that grabbed my interest was 'Threads' issue #1. The artwork looked very familar, and it turned out to be a front cover by Dick Ayers! So of course that had to go to at least in the middle of my 'possible to review' stack to read!
Here are the details for the 'Threads' comic book series as explained at Committed Comics' web site:
Threads was an experiment with the typical comic book format; A new concept in comic story telling.
Three different creative teams per issue... one constant 'Thread' in the book.
That formula turned out some of the most original and inventive stories to hit comics today.
So come follow the threads and see where they take you....
Two issues were produced in 2001 and 2002 to much critical reviews and then a limited edition collected issue was printed with new material. The collected edition has since sold out!

The cover artist of Threads shows the past (Dick Ayers), present (Alitha Martinez) and future (Raymond Thomas).
Threads was originally slated to be a six issue mini series but due to creative differences the series was shortened to two issues and later a reprinted graphic novel.
All of the artwork for Threads was fully colored and then converted to grey scale using a special process developed by Color Dojo.

So what were my thoughts of this first issue of the series? And only the first issue, since I didn't see or read the 2nd issue or the collected reprint TPB?
Well, quite honestly I'm a probable reader for anything that is 'Ghost Rider' - 'Black Rider' - 'Night Rider' - or now 'Shadow Rider' in concept. Because it was Dick Ayers that brought that original concept to life, and I have enjoyed the original series, and the reprints, and the newer versions since 1950's.
This issue started off great with a Dick Ayers front cover.  Yeah, now I gotta get over that! So turning the front cover, I see the inside front cover which explains there were to be three stories in this issue. Three stories by different creative teams.
I believe the concept that was explained as to what 'Threads' was about when this book was being produced in the Spring of 2002, was a good concept...
The first story: Greed, was a good read. The story was good in setting up the character of 'Shadow Rider', and the other characters were fleshed out in 10 pages. T he artwork and usage of grays & blacks were done well. The lettering was fine...
The second story: The Shadow Rider, with 9 pages, was a different style of writing and definitely a different art form! Even the lettering was way different from the first story. Not that I didn't like the story, it was actually good, but so far different from the first story, that it was good that this story was in the middle of the comic's pages.
The third story: Revenge, with 10 pages, was once again different from the other two stories in writing and art. Right, I know, the comic is titled 'Threads'. Okay, got it... Again, after adjusting for the new writing and art style, I found myself liking this story also.
Three 'threads', all about the same character 'Shadow Rider'. I liked this 'anthology book', even though the inside front cover says it isn't an anthology comic book, because "each issue is self contained".
Okay, but it's still an anthology comic to me! And one that I liked, even though I was a bit prejudiced into picking it up because of the Dick Ayers front cover art! The comic book gave me what it should do... a period of time of entertainment during my reading it!
What happened that the planned six issues only turned into two issues, I don't about in full, so will just say that this issue was worth picking up. Those of you that liked the original Ghost Rider - Night Rider - etc., (NOT the motorcycle guy of the 1970's), would more than likely enjoy these stories in this issue! Yeah, it's a little old, (2002), but Committed Comics does have it in their online store for sale at: http://www.committedcomics.com/comics/threads.htm

Last Friday I blogged about the passing of George Tuska, a long time comic book and comic strip artist. On Saturday I blogged about 'Silver Comics' issue #1, which attempts to bring to today's readers what made comics fun during the the 'Silver Age of Comics' that George Tuska was part of...
Which led the publisher of that comic book title to notify me that issue #3 of the series had published a cover for the issue of #3 by George Tuska. At that time the publisher, (Johnny Ortiz), had two covers for issue #3 completed, one by George and the other by Nick Cardy.
Well, readers of that issue were in for a treat, because both covers were used for the issue. Nick's was the front cover, and George's was used for the back cover. Both covers were spectacular!
Which is why I am publishing this blog post today showing both covers! Along with a more recent photo of George Tuska PLUS Nick Cardy with him when they illustrating together not too long ago!
On Friday when I blogged about George's passing, I realized that others like myself who were mentioning George's passing, had NO recent photos of George to go along with the copy text of my blog.   George was another comics creator that let his work speak and appear for himself during all those long years in the comic book and comic strip industries... Heck it wasn't until the early 1960's that most creators started receiving actual printed credits for their works in comic books!
Which is kind of sad, so I thought I would add his photo, (and Nick Cardy's) here in my blog today, along with a review of the interior pages that the two covers covered from beginning to end!
Here, I'll let you read what the PR says about the interior stories of Issue #3:

Seabolt, Ralo, and the army of Merea prepare to defend Merea from an attack by CLASH.

Boom Boxx: "The Origin of Boom Boxx!" Johnny Ortiz (writer, artist), Dan Beltran (writer) Gus Garcia was the test pilot of a space ship called the Boom Boxx. Far from Earth, the ship was struck by a comet and crash landed on a moon. A team of alien surgeons saved Garcia's life by combining his body with parts of his space ship. As Boom Boxx, a living space ship, he now has adventures throughout the universe.
Chameleon Man: "The Origin of Chameleon Man, Chapter One: Dying to be Born" Ruben Procopio (writer, artist), George Perez and Dennis Rau (script assistance) By night, Private Investigator Van West fought crime as the Crimson Mask. One night in 1966, the Crimson Mask was shot to death by a jewel thief. 1966 would also be the year the Chameleon Man was born.
The Man Called Santa: "Chimney of No Return!" Johnny Ortiz (writer, artist), Dan Beltran (writer) Satan, in control of Santa's body, battles Rudolph, the rest of the reindeer, and Tinko the Elf. Rudolph says that only Santa could lead an army to defeat Satan. Santa awakens in HELL!
Dr. Monster: "The Cage of Woe!" Johnny Ortiz (writer, layouts), Dan Beltran (writer), Vince Musacchia (penciller, inker) Man-Star is imprisoned on Areth, alongside many villains he was responsible for bringing to justice. These villains see their chance for revenge. Man-Star wins a fight with Tongor, then fights all the other prisoners at once. A prison guard stops the battle by removing Man-Star from the cell. The council decides to hold Man-Star's trial as soon as possible to prevent further chaos. The Prime Minister celebrates his control of the council on Areth, while his partner celebrates his rule over the planet in the next dimension. The planet Earth.
OK, first let me say this... I did read issue #2 of this series, but did not blog about it yet. Second, Nick & George only illustrated the two covers used, but those were a treat in themselves. Third, here's my thoughts on the features contained within issue #3:
CLOUD BUSTER - Continued with great story and art within its pages. One of the best story arcs in this Silver Comics series so far!
SEA-BOLT - This storyline reminded me why I liked the early Sub-Mariner and Aquaman features from the 'Silver Age of Comics'!
CAPTAIN RESCUE - A three page feature, it reminded me of a combo of features I had read in the past, but I can't put my fingers on which ones... But I liked it!
BOOM BOXX - Origin stories are always 'tuff' to do, but this one has my interest...
CHAMELEON MAN - The heavy usage of blacks and greys don't really fit in with the other stories in this issue. However I do remember that the pre-Code comics of the early to mid 1950's made heavy use of this style.
THE MAN CALLED SANTA - This 7 page feature gets the reader back on track in the 'Silver Age of Comics'... and I still like the concept that was first presented in issue #1 of this series.
DOCTOR MONSTER - He pretty much disappears in this six page feature, because Man-Star 'stars' in this feature.
So.... I did enjoy the two covers wrapping this issue. I also enjoyed reading the entire issue, some features more than others. But again an anthology is always hard to publish and please everyone as I have mentioned before.
Yet I am looking forward to reading all 8 issues of this series plus the 'Annual' that was also published.

Back in September I received a Press Release and some preview pages of the upcoming Dead Duck Graphic Novel...

To The Left: A closer look at the Front Cover!

Continuing my new series on comics and graphic novels that I found out about at the 2009 Long Beach Comic Con...
Is something quite different! In that this is NOT a comic book or graphic novel. Instead it is a book that my wife Tina pointed out to me at a table in the back of the LBCC. It's 'The Knight Rider Companion' - the Ultimate book to the TV series!
I'm the one actually calling it the 'Ultimate' book to the TV Series, as it has taken me several days to read it all! The author, Nick Nugent, and his publisher, Gary Spohn, were at their booth, awash in people interested in comics and graphic novels.
However, Tina remembered how I enjoyed checking out the latest reincarnation of the TV Series 'Knight Rider', both at the SDCC and on TV, so she pointed me in Nick and Gary's direction.
I'm glad she did!  However, I must admit one thing before going on about this book... Which is, I was really a 'Dallas' TV Show fan when this original series first started back in 1982! Yeah, that's right! Ol' J.R. Ewing and his Clan had my (and my ex-wife's) attention during those years. Not the 'Knight Rider'.
Yet I did know of the series, and am familar enough to recognize all of the hard work that must have gone into compiling this 'Companion' book. If it was a comic book / grahic novel compilation, it would be considered an 'Omnibus', that is how much info is in this Companion book!
Here, I'll let you read what the PR says about what it contains:

I have mentioned a few times in earlier blogs that I was reading this book, at the bottom right (featurette) section of those posts.
Tina, who wasn't a fan of the first series, or the latest series, thought highly of this book when just thumbing through it at the LBCC. She called it a 'high end book', and with her many years in publishing, she knows her stuff when describing books!
I found that the Foreword by Glen A. Larson, the Introduction by Robert Foster, and the opening chapters to totally immerse me into the World of Knight Rider, even though I had missed viewing most of the 84 episodes that comprise the series.
The black and white photos interspersed with the color photos were hi-lights to what was covered on the pages.
I mainly enjoyed reading the background stories by those involved with the production of the show. Along with the stories by those that were the main characters in the show. The additional nuggets of knowledge inserted by Nick into the episode guides were though provoking. Makes me want to go out and rent the DVDs to watch this show after the current TV Season is over!
You know, the subtitle under the Book's Title on the front cover says: "One Man Can Make A Difference". Well in putting this Companion book together, One Man has made a difference for sure! That would be Nick Nugent, who put together a well crafted book for those that have even a little bit of knowledge of Knight Rider history.   This Companion book is a definite 'buy' for those that are real fans of the TV Series, or even David Hasselhoff fans from his other shows!

CONVENTION PHOTOS: In keeping with this blog post's theme about how "One Man Can Make A Difference", I wanted to publish another photo that I took at the 2009 Long Beach Comic Con. I have already blogged about how Stan (The Man) Lee was honored twice at the LBCC earlier this month.  I caught a moment below when Stan was being truly humble at all of the recognition being bestowed upon him. Stan was a 'Man Who Made A Difference" in my life. His usage of unusual words in him comics made me search out the dictionary repeatedly to learn what the word meant that he was using! My love of reading was further encouraged by reading the works of this man. No, he may never have written the world's best selling novel that he was saving his true name for all those years, but Stan Lee is definitely in the category of "A Man Who Made A Difference"!

Is 'Silver Comics' - the comic book series!
I moved this blog up to this morning's post, because after yesterday's blog post about the passing of George Tuska, (click here), I was a little sad, and was thinking about the early years when I really loved this industry as a kid enjoying a hobby...
And then after posting the Blog about George Tuska on my Facebook Wall, I was informed by other FB Friends that Joe Rosen had just passed away earlier in the week. Which I had not heard about...
So I definitely wanted to blog about something happier here this morning!
And let me tell You... this series of comics from Juan Ortiz, Inc. is a Fun Read! And it is SO CLOSE to what really 'grabbed' me in the 'Marvel Age of Comics' and made me a lifelong fan of comic books!
Reading the first issue made me feel like I was part of 'Silver Comics Universe', right from the start! Just like Stan Lee used to do when he was getting the first issues up and running of the Marvel Superheroes that he, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Don Heck, and others introduced to kids like me!
Okay, so you already know how I feel about this first issue...
So what is the first issue all about? Here's what the PR says about it:
"Silver Comics #1: $2.95, 32 b&w pages, cover by Frank Brunner
The End: "The Snake and The Zombie!" Johnny Ortiz (writer, artist) Crime boss The Snake attempts to kill rival crime boss The Zombie, and learns The Zombie is actually The End in disguise. The End stabs The Snake and throws him into the water, apparently killing him??
Sea-Bolt: "The Reign of the Sub-Humans!" Johnny Ortiz (writer, artist), Dan Beltran (co-writer), Mark Prudeaux (inker) Sea-Bolt disrupts Zarro's torpedo attack on a cargo ship. Zarro captures Sea-Bolt.
Dr. Monster: "The Origin of Dr. Monster, Part 1: The Cosmic Crime!" Johnny Ortiz (story, layouts), Dan Beltran (writer), Vince Musacchia (penciller, inker) Count D'sa tricks Man-Star into killing an unarmed peace officer. Planetary sentries arrest Man-Star for murder.
The Man Called Santa: "'Twas The Night Before Doom!" Johnny Ortiz (writer, artist), Chris Roberts (co-writer) A Martian flying saucer digs underground in the Nevada desert, then resurfaces. Santa and his mighty reindeer chase the saucer in their orna-copter. Santa jumps onto the saucer and is captured by Satan, who is under the control of the Martian Nodge.
Cloud Buster: "Cry, The Bedeviled Planet!" Johnny Ortiz (writer, penciller), Dan Beltran (co-writer), Mark Prudeaux (inker) Cloud Buster battles a cybernetic dragon. As Zeta Base is evacuated, Professor Rendell reveals himself as a traitor and kills Karl. As Fog Wraiths enter Zeta Base and attack, Gail detonates a nuclear bomb to destroy the base and protect its secrets."

The only thing that was different in reading the above stories from the 'Good Old Days', is that the stories here in 'Silver Comics' were in black and white. Which was OK to me, because the storylines and art were pretty darn good! (I have mentioned before that I don't like the 'Essentials' format because they are in black and white, but that's because I originally read them in the color format!)
Here's my thoughts on each feature:
THE END: This feature was more pre-Code style to me. That is to say the heavy usage of black inks in the panels, and the way the panels were 'cut up'. Altho it was a little out of chronological order for 'Silver Comics', it was a good feature, and the Silver Age of Comics did start in 1956, so OK, it was an 'early' Silver Age story...
THE SEA-BOLT: Yeah! Like I was reading a Subby story in Tales To Astonish... very enjoyable!
DOCTOR MONSTER: Good Origin Story!
THE MAN CALLED SANTA: What a concept!
CLOUD BUSTER: Reminded me of some of the early tales when the MoNSTer comics were evolving into Sci-Fi and then Superheroes comics!
I truly enjoyed this first issue of the series! This would be a good introductory issue to start off tweens into reading comics! Plus it is a good issue for those that grew up in the 'Marvel Age of Comics', to remind them that comics can be Fun! No 'Grim n' Gritty' in these pages!
Silver Comics #1 truly is a 'homage' to the 'Silver Age of Comics'! It is a refreshing alternative to what I mostly see on the stands nowadays! And the front cover by Frank Brunner definitely is just a 'taste' of the goodies you'll find inside this issue!

Even though I blog once a day...
There just never is enough time to blog about all of the comic book creators and their works that I have enjoyed in the past or in the present.
I last blogged about George Tuska when he was celebrating his 92nd birthday back in April of 2008, (click here for that post), but haven't made the time to blog anything else about him or his work until today.
Sadly, this blog is about his passing... about midnight of last night.
Here is what I wrote about just a few of his achievement when I last blogged in April, 2008:
"George was born April 26, 1916 in Hartford Connecticut.
He started drawing in comics back in 1939 when he assisted on the comic strip 'Scorchy Smith'.
George also worked in the comic shop of Eisner and Iger during what is now called the 'Golden Age of Comics'!
His tie-in to 'Iron Man' is that he drew the comic book for most of the Iron Man issues from 1968 to 1978, about TEN YEARS! They were issues #5 to #106 with a few interruptions.
He's also known for his Luke Cage Power Man, Black Goliath, the Sub-Mariner, Planet of the Apes, and a few X-Men stories."
Since that last blog post, there has been a major revamp of one of the better databases for comic books, and their creators. That revamp makes it easier to sort by individual what works they are credited for, (but still not complete).

The news of George's passing was known earlier this morning, but I was looking through my photos of previous comic cons trying to find a photo of George at one of them. Since I was unsuccessful at that, I thought I should go ahead and use the one that most news people and bloggers will be using, that of George with his big smile as seen above, which is a good one to remember him by...
I first remember some of his artwork in the Atlas HoRRoR comics. Although those were coverless comics that I read by that later time. George had gotten out of comics after the Comic Code Authority was instituted. He had gone into comic strips. I didn't see more of his work until the Tower Comics days, and then of course at Marvel Comics, because I was buying every Marvel there was at the time. George drew several features, but is most remembered for the Iron Man series, as he was on that feature for almost ten years...
George went on to DC Comics in the mid 1970's drawing a comic strip for them, so I kind of lost track of his work at that time. He also drew comic books for DC Comics later, and then retired from the comics industry in the mid 1980's. However, he was still illustrating commissioned pieces for his fans till recently.
George Tuska is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy, and their three children, as well as grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. My condolences to his family on the passing of George...

CONVENTION PHOTOS: I would have to say that it is largely due to comics creators like George Tuska, about whom the main feature of this blog post is about today, that there even are Marvel Films like the Iron Man Film that was released recently. It is due to guys and gals in the trenches that got the Iron Man title(s) out during all these years that made long time fans, and long ago lapsed fans, even want to come out to an 'Iron Man' film in the first place! I know that I for one went to the special program at the 2007 San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) on the then upcoming Iron Man Film, because of guys like George Tuska that had kept me interested in the Iron Man character for so long! And yeah, other filmgoers like my wife went because of the great casting like Robert Downey Jr seen below! But still, if it wasn't for guys and gals like George Tuska....

Continuing my new series on comics and graphic novels that I found out about at the 2009 Long Beach Comic Con...
Is the Graphic Novel by Gerimi Burleigh, "Eye of the Gods". Gerimi was very friendly to all that stopped by at his table in Artist Alley during the Con. I noticed that and so introduced myself to him and spent some time there checking out his new graphic novel.
His booth was well displayed, and his banner (shown above) was striking. Many eyes caught this banner as they strolled by in Artists Alley. This was compared to too many table that had nothing behind the creator(s) to catch a passerby's attention.   When there is nothing behind the creator, and he or she is so very busy sketching and doesn't look up at potential customers, I don't see how those creators get any new business. Repeat business I could see coming back, but new biz? Unless they are a well known established artist?
Anyways, I thumbed through the graphic novel enough that I was asked if I wanted to review it in my Blog. I only spend time at table with creators or their projects that I believe are interesting enough to make a good blog post, as I have stated before.
So what is the concept of this graphic novel about? Here's what the web site that Gerimi has says about the concept:
"EYE OF THE GODS is a psychological thriller about a man who's life spirals out of control when he is cursed with the ability of remote viewing.
It combines the high-tension paranoia of ENEMY OF THE STATE with the foreboding chill of THE DEAD ZONE.
Sean Black undergoes surgery, cloning his eyes to restoring his failing vision. After the operation, he "dreams" of a murder, only to discover that it really happened…
…But the death isn't being reported as a crime. When his curiosity gets the best of him, he uncovers a conspiracy and sets off a chain of events that unravel his life."

Okay, with all of that out of the way, what did I think about this graphic novel? Well first, let me say this.   For such a nice guy at the LBCC that I met, he had a lot of emotion and story pent up within him to tell! And tell it he did in this graphic novel!
Yeah, the interior pages may be black and white, but the action, scenery, and characters portrayed were colorful!   I didn't read this all at one sitting, so I was appreciative that the graphic novel was separated into chapters.
Chapters I may add, that were easily picked back up on when I came back!
Since Gerimi created, wrote and drew the graphic novel, I'll make mention of his different responsibilities and whether he accomplished them or not in my opinion here...
The storyline was very suspenseful, and kept building. The dialogue was not over the top, and seemed plausible for each character to speak. There are a few curse words, but were not used for shock purposes.
The penciling was well done, and I immediately liked his style. The use of grays and blacks in the story were well done.
The lettering was where he wanted the balloons placed as an artist. So the lettering never interferred with the art.
This graphic novel kept me interested, and was a good read. If you are into this type of genre, this is definitely a graphic novel that will be one that you will want to read.

Continuing my new series on comics and graphic novels that I found out about at the 2009 Long Beach Comic Con...
Is Zombie Ranch!
Okay, so once again that isn't usually the genre of comics that I blog about here... And yeah, Tina looked at me kinda funny when I stopped at Dawn & Clint's table to take a closer look at the publication pictured above!
However, even being as 'Old School' as I am, I do like to keep up with what is out there being currently published. And right now Zombies and Vampires are still 'hot' for pop culture topics.   Heck, I even blogged a review about another Zombie comic book a few weeks ago, (The Fearless Zombie Hunters)!
Plus, from what I could see from the cover of the publication laying on the table, it was a lot 'cleaner' in looks than most zombie publications. So Tina hung out with me for a while until I finished asking my questions about the concept, the promo comic book, and the other promotional items I saw on their table for 'Zombie Ranch'.
So what is this concept about? Here's what the PR says about it:
"Meet Susannah Zane. She’s a rancher. She raises livestock.
Only thing is, her stock isn’t technically “live”.
The Great Zombie Plague wiped out a fair portion of civilization, and humans weren’t the only victims of its ravenous hunger. But that was years ago, and where cattle, pigs, and sheep got scarce, practical sorts found a new herd to market: the zombies themselves!
Now a crew has come out to film a new reality television series on the subject. To the viewers in the Safe Zones, it might be an eye-opener; but for Suzie and her compadres it’s just another day in the unlife.

What I found when reading the promo comic book was Not the 'typical zombie' story. Of course being a promo publication, it was of shorter length than a regular comic book. In this case only six pages were shown, but it was enough to tease a reader that is into this genre into checking out the concept further! Plus on the seventh page there were creators bios and the web site where you can see additional pages of this concept for free! Updates are scheduled for every Wednesday.
For those that are really into zombies, this is a lighter version, (so far), of a zombies concept. For those that aren't into zombies, but want to know what the fuss is about, then this could be a less horrific way of checking the zombie nations out. The concept appears to be well thought out, and Dawn's artwork is pleasant to look at. I'll be checking in on updates on the web to see how this concept is developing. Taking a break today from my new series on comics and graphic novels that I found out about at the 2009 Long Beach Comic Con...
And instead blogging about what YOU should be able to find at YOUR Local Comic Book Store, (LCBS) in two weeks!
That would be the first issue of the new four issue mini-series from Bluewater Productions, written by Bill Spangler and illustrated by John DaCosta.   My thanks to Bill for bringing this new comic book title to my attention!
So what is this concept about? Here's what the Bluewater PR says about the concept:
"The classic space hero from the 1950s returns in an all-new limited series! Long before Kirk, Spock and those other guys went to school, Tom Corbett, Roger Manning, and Astro were attending Space Academy, in a TV series that sparked novels, comic strips and merchandise. Tom is the charismatic leader of the team, Roger is sharp-tongued navigator, and Astro controls engineering. The cadets have their first encounter with a dangerous new enemy with a surprising origin!"

What I liked about this first issue is that it is a Fun Read! And No, I'm Not That Old to remember the original airings of the TV episodes! (Almost, but not quite!). The original series ran from 1950 - 1955 on a few different networks.
Anyways, there was a series of Tom Corbett — Space Cadet stories that were depicted in what was then the 'pop culture' of the 1950's. Tom Corbett was on television, on the radio, in books, and of course comic books - my favorite venue at the time. Additionally there were comic strips, coloring books, and View-Master reels that were also manufactured during the 1950s.
There has been an attempt to bring back this title in the 1990's, but that didn't work out. I'm glad to see this concept being brought back now, and introduced to a new generation of readers! An added plus is that is a four issue mini-series, so there should be a complete story arc printed here.
Bill Spangler's first issue story is good reading for an introductory issue and has a 'hook' to bring you back for the next issue. You have to get those intros out of the way so you can move your readers along to the next issue! Additionally there is a 'mystery' of which only part of it is answered in this first issue, so you'll have to come back for the second issue! Good lead in issue for this series!
John DaCosta's artwork is somewhat angular and bold, a different style than I am used to seeing sci-fi comics illustrated in, but in this sci-fi story it fits right in!   Some may consider his art style in this series 'cartoony', but it fit with bringing this series up to date in my opinion. Besides, I am so tired of seeing the Buck Rogers franchise being rehashed and reworked and replayed, that it is nice to see another older series be brought to light via the sequential art form!
Niko's coloring in this issue doesn't reflect a lot of cold dark colors, even though the action takes place mostly in space. The colors used on the pages are 'warm' colors and flow well with the illustration style.
William's lettering is his usual good work. Which speaks a lot for itself.
The only thing I could see in the presentation of the comic itself, is that the commercial ad pages are kind of 'jarring' against the illustrated pages of the comic book itself. I've seen other companies save their ad pages for the last part of the book. In this comic book, that might have been the better placement of ad pages...
For a fun read, and once you're hooked into the 'mystery', you'll want to get the second issue of this series.

This entry in our 'Spotlight On...' blog post series is about...
Amanda Stevens, who has been my 'Facebook Friend' for several months.
The main reason I am choosing to 'Spotlight' her today in my Blog, is because she has become a well known person at several Pop Culture and Comic Cons during this year, as well as growing in popularity online via her web site and her own Facebook member page!
She is also appearing at a couple more upcoming Comics Cons before the end of the year, including one that I've blogged recently about, the 1st Victoria Comic Con being held in British Columbia, Canada! (See here for that blog post.)
So, when I first contacted Amanda about doing a 'Spotlight On... (her)', she wanted to know what I would want to 'spotlight'. I suggested that her first paragraph be on whatever basic info she would want to share with the public. The following is the first paragraph reply:
"Amanda Stevens continues her crusade in bringing awareness to the events that she was involved in which came to be known as the "Superhuman Experiment". Amanda's physical and mental abilities have been enhanced slightly beyond normal limits though a combination of unspecified secret technologies. Recently she has been able to discuss some of these technological advancements in light of the superhuman experiment comic book series based upon her experiences in an underground experiment."

For the second paragraph I suggested to her the following: How you got into comics, and especially the role in the Superhuman Experiment!   Her reply:
"About two years ago, I consulted a local printing shop to have some some shirts screen printed.   The owners became very curious when they saw an “X” in parenthesis on a shirt I was wearing. They started to inquire about the (X), and I told them it had to do with an underground experiment I was involved in. In learning more about my experience, they thought that it would make an incredible comic book. The book would eventually be known as the Superhuman Experiment and would become a hybrid of both reality and a comic book world based upon actual occurrences.
We released the first book of the Superhuman Experiment series: (X): ORIGINS and I began doing comic book conventions.. I immediately feel in love with comics and the conventions, especially all the wonderful people I have met as a result. The newest book entitled Superhuman Experiment: (X) Ultimate Reality, debuted at Tampa Comic Book Convention on July 12th. The Superhuman Experiment has since has since developed into a new genre that combines reality with a radically immersive comic book world that has grown nationwide."

I suggested that for her third paragraph she should follow up by listing what cons she has already been at, as I don't blog about all comic / pop culture cons that are happening. She listed the following cons, showing what I said about her being busy this year!
"Cons that I have already been at includes: Mega Con, FX, Wrath Of Con, Florida Super Con, Oasis, Dragon Con, Tampa Con, Mini Mega Con.
I LOVE meeting the fans and will be signing all day Saturday from 10am-4pm. I will be the one walking around with cool give-a-way posters and the full-body [X] suit :o) "

Continuing my new series on comics and graphic novels that I found out about at the 2009 Long Beach Comic Con...
Is G.I. Joe: Cobra: Special #1 From IDW Publishing!
Okay, so that isn't usually the genre of comics that I blog about here...
But after stopping in at the IDW booth and talking with AnnaMaria White, Marketing & PR Manager for IDW, I decided to give it a read.
And you know what....?
This comic book really surprised me! It was a really good read! And it kept me interested in reading the whole issue without thinking it was a 'G.I. Joe' comic book. Yeah, I know, I buy and sell a lot of GI Joe Comics, mostly from the era when Marvel Comics published the title. But you know what? This isn't one of those type of stories!
And yes, Tina and I have read several IDW series before. Tina especially liked the '24' series based on the FOX TV Show. However, this story and art is a lot more 'realistic' than other G.I. Joe issues I have read in the past.
So what is this issue about? Here's the blurb from the PR for the issue:
"Spinning out of the red-hot thriller G.I. JOE: COBRA, this one-shot follows up on issue #4’s surprise reveal and focuses on our big bad guy (or is it multiple bad guys?). By the same creative team as the original mini, don’t miss out. This is the perfect end cap to the series!"

What I found was a well written story with a lot of meaningful narration. Actual spoken dialogue was sparse, adding to the meaning of the storyline.
The colors to this issue fit so well with the storyline that the colorist has to be duly noted for a job well done!
The style of art fit this story very well. So much so that I believe this is a well rounded comic book issue that I would give to the mainstream viewing public that don't read comics to show them what a story with sequential art can be! It is that good of an issue!
The cover price to this comic book is $3.99 USD.

Continuing my new series on comics and graphic novels that I found out about at the 2009 Long Beach Comic Con...
Is the 'Dominion: Eulogy', the comic book series from 2FBProductions.
I met Carl Dancy at The Antidote Trust (TAT) booth during the LBCC.
The TAT booth was one I had also visited during the recent SDCC, and of course was going to stop at their booth at the LBCC to see what was new from members in their collective. Plus to see if any other members of the collective were there that I hadn't met before.
I had missed seeing Carl and Noel from 2FBProductions at the SDCC.  What I picked up at the LBCC was the 'Ashcan' of their comic book, plus issue #1 of this comic book series.
Long time readers of this Blog will know that I enjoy reading many genres of comics, and am not stuck in reading just one genre. Of course some genres are more interesting to me than others, so after a while, you'll see how Your tastes and my tastes in comics compare when I blog about them here.
This comic book is printed on heavier paper, and the colors jumped right out at me from each page!  The 'splash page' was a little heavy on text, but it set the stage for the next pages which were more illustration than text. So I was glad for the informative 'splash page'.
I caught on quickly enough to enjoy the setting that the creator(s) were presenting to me as a reader. However, I am glad I also had the 'Ashcan' which basically showcased the characters' bios and sketches in its black and white pages.
So what is this comic book about? Here's what the creator(s) say about the issue and what is contained in its' pages:
"In a galaxy many light years from our own, an intergalactic war is being waged; a war that has extinguished the lives of billions and that will eventually thrust itself upon the unsuspecting and ill-prepared inhabitants of the planet Earth. But from the ruins of destruction comes a hero, a hero who may be the only hope of a universe bent on self-destruction, a hero named DOMINION!

I finished reading the first issue and read the ashcan also.
The ashcan was a little 'heavy' in detail, but this showed me that the creator(s) had worked out a good background for the different characters and different alien races. However the characters were shown in black and white and a little hard to identify when reading the color comic book.
The comic book storyline flowed, and the use of the colors on the pages made the characters stand out for me. There was a lot of dialogue, but considering this was a first issue, that was OK for me.
My experience in reading stories in this genre, is that the creators quite often will get 'bogged' down including too many different races for the reader to keep track of. Sure, the creator(s) will know who they are and what they are about, but the first time reader could get lost. I know that some mainstream readers / viewers don't like the Star Trek and Star Wars franchises because of too many alien races. Seriously!
It was good to have a 'scorecard', (the Ashcan) come with this comic book. I would suggest buying both at the same time to enjoy the storyline more fully, and get you ready for the second issue.
The machinery and space suits were finely illustrated in the comic book. It is only the reptilian aliens that look a little 'strange' to me in their representation. But then again, I'm not an artist, and those aliens kept the same 'look' throughout the issue, so that must be the way this race is meant to be represented when drawn on paper.
This first issue's cover price is a good buy for those that like this kind of comic book genre. It looks to be a good time to get in on the ground floor of this series.

Again, I recommend adding the Ashcan for $1.00 which is a good guide to this series.
For upcoming Issues After #1 - Please note:   I asked Carl: 'When is issue #2 scheduled to be released?'. Carl replied: "We don't have a set date but we expect issue 2 to be available first quarter of 2010 and it will be, as will the subsequent issues, only be available in digital format. Once all four issues are released we will then return to the traditional print media for a trade paperback".
Also, remember the paragraph at the beginning when I stated that the paper seemed to be a little heavier in weight? Carl replied to me when I asked that question the following: "We used a local printer recommended by one of the other TAT members, and while he did an excellent job, the paper is a little heavier than standard comic book stock and it is also a little wider, closer to Silver Age size".

Just in time for Halloween is the comic book 'Rob Bot - Robot Mechanic' #1, with a special Halloween theme.
Jason tells me that this comic book will be debuting at the upcoming Big Apple Con during Halloween Weekend in New York City!
So what is this comic book about? Here's what the creator says about the issue and what is contained in its' pages:
Rob Bot sets out on some fun strange journeys filled with technoghosts, gremlins, specters and much more.
Art, Lettered, Designed and Created by Jason May.
Three, eerie themed, action packed shorts written by Steven Withrow, Shawn Granger and Joe Caramagna.
Pinup by Chris Gugliotti.
Interview with creator by Brian LeTendre of Secret Identity Podcast.
I received a preview copy, and found that it is a black & white interior pages comic book with full color cover.
I also found three well written and illustrated stories centering on this character, Rob Bot, who is a robot mechanic. Not having run across this character before, and realizing that it is a type of 'anthology' comic book, I wondered what I would think of it, as anthology comics are usually harder to review.
Well... I enjoyed reading all three stories! The fact that it is a Halloween Special comic book added to the book by giving it a 'theme', tying all three stories together.
The artwork and lettering were top notch, and flowed with the stories by the different writers.
The main character has depth and the three stories gave additional insight to him.
This is a well written and illustrated comic book in my opinion. I would look forward to reading more issues of this character!

Jason also wrote the following about the upcoming Big Apple Con that he will be attending soon:
"I will be bringing piles of robot head paintings, original art from various published works and my sketching materials. I will be doing my usual $10 robot sketches and will be happy to discuss any other types of sketches or commissions over the weekend. I may have a guitar or two with me. We'll have to see what time permits. I hope to see a good turn out."
